We are heartbroken by the violence in downtown Minneapolis and extend our deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones, the first responders, healthcare teams, and all affected by this tragedy.
Memorial Blood Centers has provided nearly 300 red blood cells, platelets, and plasma to support patient care and remains in close coordination with area healthcare partners, ready to respond as patient needs evolve.
At this time, the immediate blood needs related to this incident are being met. That is possible because of donors who gave before this tragedy and the strength of our broader blood center network, which allows us to move blood where it is needed most.
We are tremendously grateful to the donors who gave in the days and weeks leading up to this tragedy. Blood must already be collected, tested, and ready for hospitals before an emergency happens, which is why a strong and consistent donor base is so important.
Helping Maintain the Blood Supply in the Days Ahead
Our work now turns to replenishing the blood supply in the Twin Cities. Donations have been lagging for the past two weeks, and our inventory was already lower than we need heading into the holiday weekend, when donations typically decline sharply.
Eligible donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in the coming days and weeks at mbc.org or by calling 1.888.448.3253. If you already have an appointment scheduled, please keep it.
We especially need type O blood, AB plasma, and platelets, and we are asking our community to help replenish our blood supply and rebuild inventory for patients throughout our region.
Emergencies like this can create a sudden and significant need for blood, but there is no substitute for a steady supply of blood already on the shelves. Every day, patients rely on blood for trauma care, surgeries, cancer treatment, complications during childbirth, and many other serious medical conditions.
The best way our community can help support the blood supply right now is to donate and continue donating in the months ahead. Consistent donations help ensure blood is available for patient needs and unexpected emergencies.
To our donors, blood drive partners and everyone who supports Memorial Blood Centers and our hospital partners: thank you. Your continued generosity helps ensure we can be there for our community every day, and in the moments when we are needed most.
