Ask the Doc

Q: My family has a tradition of getting together to perform community service projects during the fall and throughout the holidays. As a regular blood donor, I was thinking of organizing something to get other members of my family involved. Any suggestions?

What a great example you and your family are setting, demonstrating what “the season of giving” really means. Especially at this time of year, many of us are thinking of those less fortunate. And through Memorial Blood Centers there are a number of ways to give back to the community and be of service to others, including making a blood donation during our Pint for a Pound campaign.

For the fourth consecutive year, Memorial Blood Centers is again joining forces with Second Harvest Heartland to save lives through blood donation AND help fight hunger. Throughout the month of November, when members of the community roll up their sleeves and give a pint of blood, Memorial Blood Centers will donate the equivalent of one pound of food to Second Harvest. This annual program makes it easier than ever for families and friends to get together and double the impact of their blood donations: to restock the life-saving blood supplies our local hospitals need while helping to fill area food shelves as well. With each unit of blood, blood donors are helping to save and sustain as many as 3 lives. Plus, they are helping to put food on the table for a family of 4—positively impacting as many as 7 people in need.

Over the years, Memorial Blood Centers has donated over 60,000 pounds of food to Second Harvest—helping nearly a quarter million people. We’re looking forward to adding to that milestone, and you can help. Upcoming blood drives in the Ashland area where you can make a donation and contribute to the Pint for a Pound campaign include:

Memorial Blood Centers also offers small groups of 5 or more friends, family, or work colleagues an opportunity to donate together at their very own Donor Days event, held at one of our Northland donor centers: at Essentia Health in Superior or Burning Tree Plaza in Duluth. This provides a special way to come together in celebration and friendship while giving the gift of life to others. Donor Day events can be scheduled by contacting Trae Wooten at 1-888-GIVE-BLD or twooten@mbc.org.

Please encourage family and friends to find out more about donor eligibility requirements prior to making an appointment to donate. Detailed information can be found on MBC.ORG or by calling 1-888-GIVE-BLD.

Again, thank you for donating blood and engaging your family and others in the community in saving lives.
