Ask the Doc

September 2014 • Published in The Daily Press, Ashland WI

This September, Memorial Blood Centers is spreading awareness about childhood cancer—the #1 disease-related killer of children ages 1 to 19 in the U.S. Throughout the month, Memorial Blood Centers is urging all eligible blood donors to give in honor of the nearly 16,000 children who are expected to begin treatment this year for this life-threatening disease.

Treatments including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery may result in blood loss or inability to produce new blood cells putting them at risk for anemia, life-threatening infections or bleeding. Blood products are essential to support therapy in pediatric cancer patients.

Twenty-five percent of all blood products help support treatment for cancer patients, including young children like Ike Yarmon. Just 3 days before his 5th birthday, Ike was diagnosed with leukemia and received his first blood transfusion while still in the hospital. He needed regular transfusions to help sustain him as he endured months of chemotherapy treatments.

“We never thought we would be walking this cancer path,” mom Chelsea Yarmon said, “but thanks to blood donors who helped keep our son alive we have a good chance of beating this thing. Now we are even more motivated to give blood because we see how it affects patients like our son. I hope that anyone who is eligible to give blood will. It takes so little time and you never know when you or a loved one could be in need of blood.”

During the month of September, we encourage you to donate blood with Memorial Blood Centers to ensure an ample supply of life-saving blood.
