East Coast Snowstorms Affect Nation's Blood Supply

January 04, 2018

Saint Paul, MN – A snowstorm affecting several New England states has forced several local blood banks to close, cancelling all blood and platelet donations for those days. Although most of the blood supply remains stable, the closures have caused an emergency shortage of platelets, and has stressed the supply of type O negative blood—the universal blood type that can be transfused to all patients.

Since platelets only have a 5-day shelf life, even a single day disruption can cause an immediate, severe problem for cancer patients, accident victims, and others who require platelet transfusions. Memorial Blood Centers is aiding east coast blood centers when possible, and we encourage our generous donors to schedule an appointment to donate platelets or blood so we can lend a hand and keep the nation’s blood supply stable.

Schedule your appointment online at, or by calling 1-888-448-3253. It’s important for donors to keep their appointments, as this helps us plan a stable inventory for our hospitals and hospitals in need.
