Blood Transfusions Ease Pain for Sickle Cell Patients

September 01, 2016

(St. Paul, MN) – Imagine pain so bad you can’t move for days, sometimes weeks. That’s what it’s like for children living with sickle cell anemia—the most common genetic disease that impacts 1 in 500 children in the African-American community.

Join Memorial Blood Centers during Sickle Cell Awareness Month, as we team up with KMOJ-FM and North Memorial Medical Center to increase awareness about this life-long disease.

We invite eligible donors to donate blood at North Memorial Medical Center (3300 Oakdale Ave N, Robbinsdale, MN 55422) on Wednesday, September 7, 2015 from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM. During the blood drive, you can learn more about Memorial Blood Centers’ Sickle Cell Donor Program, enjoy cookies from The Cookie Cart, watch a live radio broadcast from KMOJ-FM between 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM, and most importantly—donate blood to help ease pain for those living with sickle cell.

Sickle cell disease produces misshaped red blood cells that can clog blood and reduce oxygen flow, triggering a crisis. When a crisis occurs, it causes excruciating pain for the patient. Often, only blood transfusions can relieve the agony and complications.

Memorial Blood Centers’ Sickle Cell Donor Program takes extra steps to carefully match blood donors of similar ethnic origin with sickle cell patients needing transfusions. This helps minimize immune complications. Support of Memorial Blood Centers’ Sickle Cell Donor Program is made possible by a generous gift from Ameriprise Financial.

Media opportunity between 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Speak with parents whose children have received blood transfusions to relieve pain related to sickle cell crises. Media contacts from KMOJ-FM and Memorial Blood Centers will also be on site and available for interviews.
